In the 1980’s there was a Hair Club for Men® commercial where Sy Sperling says, “I’m not only the Hair Club President, but I’m also a client.” This resonated with me especially, because, as many of you may be aware, I am not only a doctor, but a patient as well. Around this time, I was a practicing neuropsychologist with three offices and over 250 patients. In addition, I had one of the first integrative practices in New England. As part of my mental health team, we had a psychiatrist, two psychiatric nurses, four licensed social workers and four psychologists. On the alternative medicine team, we had a polarity therapist, a massage therapist and an acupuncturist.

On March 5th 1990, my life changed when I had a cerebral bleed causing me to blackout while driving resulting in a 60 mile an hour head-on automobile accident. Within five months, I had brain surgery. A few years later, doctors told me that I was permanently brain damaged and would not make any further progress. I went home cried and then remembered I had an integrative team of experts. I enlisted their expertise and that of Dr. Igor Burdenko, who is now a member of my current integrative team. Dr. Burdenko is the founder and chairman of the Burdenko Water and Sports Therapy Institute. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on the use of water for rehabilitation, conditioning, and training. With determination and the help from my integrative team of experts, I was able to regain my life once again.

Dr. Diane's 5 Prong ApproachHaving experienced the powerful advantage of blending traditional, alternative, and complementary treatments in my own journey, I developed the Dr. Diane® 5 Prong Approach. This approach treats the patient from five separate, but connected, aspects: physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and energy. Today, in my current practice, I have expanded my integrative team. Dr. Diane®’s integrative team of brain health experts specializes in a variety of services using the best practices in complementary, alternative, and conventional medicine, including Neurofeedback, Reiki, Acupuncture, Nutrition, Speech and Language Pathology, and more.

So now when someone calls to schedule a consult with me, I joke that I am not only a neuropsychologist and board-certified health psychologist, but I am a brain injury survivor with Lyme disease, chronic pain and diverticulosis.

In the past two years I’ve been diagnosed with nonmalignant brain tumor in my frontal lobe and a growing hemangioma in my liver. More recently, I slipped on ice and fell, causing pain and injury to my shoulder. During these times, I once again turned to my integrative team for help. Nutritionist Martha Lindsay MS, CNE, a member of this team, specializes in Nutrition Education and Nutrition Response Testing. Martha has helped with my Lyme disease, chronic pain, and diverticulosis and also with the recent shoulder injury. To treat my symptoms she adjusts my diet – be it to include anti-inflammatory foods or foods rich in antioxidants, and she recommends various whole food supplements based on my needs. Also, she prepared me for my trip to India by helping me plan accordingly to adjust my diet to accommodate the new Indian cuisines.

Clara Diebold is a Reiki Master and the Reiki practitioner on my team. Through energy healing, Clara has been treating my chronic pain, brain tumor and liver issues. Meanwhile, Jennifer Stanley and Wendy Kevier- Hewett, our two licensed massage therapists, have been working on my chronic pain and recent shoulder injury. I find Reiki and Massage therapy to be very therapeutic and relaxing. This in and of itself helps to promote healing and heightens overall well-being.

There are also three Acupuncturists on my integrative team, William Mogan, Tom Tam, and Yvonne Tam. Susan Keefe practices Homeopathy. Both Susan and William helped me regain my life after brain injury and overcome symptoms of PCS and chronic pain. Another member of the team, Dr. Paul Schoonman, practices Chiropractic and has also helped treat my chronic pain.

There are many other members of my integrative team who are highly skilled in their specialties. The members of my integrative team are the only practitioners that I have needed to maintain my health. Along with their treatments, I also use Bach Flowers and perform Neurofeedback on myself. These effective and drug-free treatments help overcome many conditions and symptoms.

So, you can clearly see, I’m not only the club president, I am a client and know from personal experience that what we do here at Dr. Diane® Brain Health truly works, I say…There is a Way™!

Within each person shines an inner light that illuminates our path and is the source of hope. Illness, trauma, suffering and grief can diminish the light and shroud hope. I am a catalyst for hope and change, offering a way to rekindle this inner light.
