While a Concussion is the actual event, which may have symptoms, Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is the name for the collective group of ongoing symptoms a person can experience after having a Concussion. When Concussion symptoms do not resolve within a week or two of disrupted function, the label Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is then applied.
In Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) symptoms often appear in clusters and may last for days, weeks, or longer. Intensified by fear and uncertainty, this syndrome can interfere with daily life and lead to frustration and despair, especially when its cause remains unknown. Unlike brain injuries detected through CAT scan, EEG, and MRI, Mild Traumatic Brain injury (mTBI) can only be accurately diagnosed through diagnostic testing that detects nerve cell damage, as in neuropsychological evaluation (testing that measures different aspects of brain function), SWI MRI, DTI MRI or QEEG.
During Dr. Diane’s own rehabilitation, it became clear that a majority of people, from the injured person to those in health care and social services had no idea what a mTBI is. Therefore, she decided to write Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, the first reference book to provide vital information to people with mTBI, their families and friends, and to organizations that work with them. She has since written an updated, even more comprehensive bookbuilding upon this original version, titled Coping with Concussion and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
In the first six years following her accident, Dr. Diane found it difficult to do the things that were once second nature. Yet, with time, comes healing in body, mind and spirit. You realize that you are no longer the same person as before the injury, but you are stronger, a composite of “old” and “new.” Gradually, you accept the changes within yourself and begin to reconnect with life again. Through your inner strength, you can emerge from the cocoon of brain injury.
Symptoms of Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS)
The following list of Post Concussion symptoms may also be experienced by individuals who have had a Concussion, Blast Injury, or Stroke/Aneurysm, because all of these injuries are types of brain injuries. That is not to say that because you have any of these symptoms, you have a brain injury. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms as a result of a brain injury, Dr. Diane’s Brain Rehabilitation Program can help you regain your life.
