On Second Chances
“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
– Charles Darwin
With the recent tragedy in Tucson and the remarkably promising progress of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, these words really hit home. After being shot in the head and suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury, Congresswoman Giffords is EXTREMELY lucky to be alive. Ninety percent of cases of gun wounds to the brain result in death. Several news sources actually declared her dead immediately following the shooting!
Now, just five days later, her progress is astounding, having opened her eye, scratched her nose, and even given a thumbs-up upon request. These tiny gestures which many of us take for granted lay the foundation for a truly inspiring story of hope. Perhaps Gabrielle Giffords will have a second chance. Perhaps she will be given another opportunity to speak for the people, to speak from the heart, to accomplish the goals she set out achieve before her near-fatal shooting.
Though it is still too early to tell the extent of the damage to her brain, Giffords’ family, friends, doctors, and supporters are hoping for a full recovery. It will be a long and painful road, but one should never underestimate the power of hope, support, and second chances…
