What is Reiki

Reiki is a method of energy healing developed in Japan in 1922 and currently practiced all over the world. Reiki utilizes a natural universal energy that helps to balance the client’s system and assists healing at all levels. Because it is relaxing and supports the healing process, it can help treat a wide variety of issues. Reiki is especially effective for stress reduction, for increasing overall vitality, and for treating injuries. It can be used independently to maintain health. When medical conditions are present, it is used in conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques.

What is Energy?

Everything is made up of energy, including humans. Everything is a vibration, and the world around us is comprised of shifting energetic patterns. The subtle energy (chi or ki) that flows through the body is as important to health and well-being as other bodily functions. When a person’s chi is strong and free flowing, that person is healthy, mentally and physically. However, when these energies become weak, disturbed or out of balance, we may experience physical and emotional symptoms. Balancing and strengthening subtle energies can assist the body, mind and spirit heal and stay well.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki energy is a positive universal energy that is available to all living beings. Reiki practitioners have been trained to bring this energy to their clients, so that their clients can benefit from its healing properties. Because of the particular frequency of Reiki energy, which is thought to be in the alpha range, it is relaxing and balancing to the entire system and supports the body’s natural healing processes.

Reiki Can Help With Post-Concussion Symptoms

Reiki is very calming and it supports the natural healing process, so it can have multiple positive effects for those recovering from concussion and those suffering with post-concussive symptoms.

Specific conditions that may respond well to Reiki as a complementary therapy include:

Reiki for Stress Management

The negative effect of stress on all areas of our functioning is well-known and scientifically supported. Many health conditions can be exacerbated by stress, and stress is a risk factor for many types of disease. Those who are recovering from concussion or other injuries may notice that stress can make their symptoms worse. Stress is, of course, a major factor in anxiety and depression. Stress is often a factor in chronic pain, because pain causes stress, and stress worsens pain, creating a vicious cycle.

Our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal themselves. Stress makes this more difficult. When we relax, we allow our bodies’ own healing abilities to work. Reiki promotes a feeling of well-being and deep relaxation which facilitates healing.

My Reiki sessions are wonderful. They always leave me feeling relaxed and balanced.
- Susan M.

Reiki for Anxiety or Trauma

For some of us, stress reaches the point where it significantly interferes with life. Some may have received a diagnosis of Anxiety or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Others may simply feel that stress is getting the better of them and taking the joy out of life. The relaxing nature of Reiki sessions makes them a wonderful complementary treatment for any type of anxiety. In Dr. Diane®’s office, education in Reiki self-treatment is also available, so that clients may use Reiki as part of their self-care routines.

I’m much more relaxed after a Reiki session. And it’s wonderful to have a way to calm myself in difficult moments.
- Karen D.

Reiki for Pain

Pain often responds well to Reiki. From an energy standpoint, pain can be caused or worsened by either a lack of energy or an excess of energy in a particular area of the body. When Reiki is performed, the entire energetic system is balanced and vitalized. The body’s energies flow more freely and evenly, so clients often experience a reduction or even a complete cessation of pain. Chronic pain conditions generally require a series of treatments to achieve lasting results, but some relief is often felt immediately.

I’ve had chronic back and hip pain to the extent that it compromised my activities and lifestyle. In less than three months my pain has decreased markedly and my mobility has greatly increased. I would recommend Reiki sessions to anyone who experiences pain and is looking for a positive path to relief.
- Celia S.

Reiki for Injuries

When an injury occurs, the body must marshal its vital energy in order to heal the area. When the overall system is weak, or energy is not flowing freely, the body is less able to heal. Reiki adds positive energy to the body and also helps the entire energy system flow more efficiently. In addition, Reiki is transmitted to the injured area intensively, which can accelerate the healing process. Reiki can be used effectively to treat an injury that occurred many months or years in the past. If an injury is treated within the first two weeks, even a short series of sessions can bring excellent results.

My back is vulnerable from having previous disc problems. I was in a minor car accident recently and could barely move because of pain and stiffness in my back. After a Reiki session later that same day, I was in no pain. The remaining stiffness was gone the following day.
- Larry

Reiki for Surgery Support

Surgery is very stressful to the body and mind. Reiki can be used to ease the stress of surgery and to help the body heal. Generally, one or more sessions are given preoperatively, in order to build the general vitality of the body and also to help relieve stress. Then a short series of sessions is given post-operatively to assist healing injured tissues and, again, to promote relaxation.

My wife was treated with Reiki before and after abdominal surgery. The results were amazing. When the surgeon checked her incisions at the post-op appointment, he couldn’t believe how quickly they had healed.
- Jim S.

A Reiki Session

Reiki treatment involves the client lying down on a massage table while fully clothed. The practitioner generally begins by scanning the client’s energy field to detect disruptions. S/he then places hands on various positions on the body, including the abdomen, head, back, feet, and any other problem areas. By doing this, the practitioner makes Reiki energy available to the client’s system.

As is true for any healing method, best results are obtained from a thoroughly-trained professional Reiki practitioner. An experienced practitioner is able to assess the client’s energy system and to use this knowledge to individualize treatment to each client’s need.
